Write Your Valentine’s Card by Hand: Writing Drills to Help

Some words can be entrusted to keyboards, but certain words deserve to be written by hand. Not because they are rare, or ornate, or difficult to spell, but because of what they ask of us. Time. Presence. Reflection. Intention. Effort. Because in a culture built around shortcuts, effort has become a form of intimacy.

We live in a world where words arrive instantly. They glow briefly on screens and disappear just as fast. Convenience has taught us to measure communication by speed, not senses. Yet the words that matter most have never been in a hurry.

A handwritten Valentine’s card does not compete with digital messages on efficiency. It competes on meaning. The gentle pressure of ink on paper, the natural irregularities of handwriting, even the subtle pauses between lines that reveal themselves through ink and spacing. These are the details that whisper between lines: this mattered enough to slow down for.

Many people feel self-conscious about their handwriting. And that is understandable. Any skill left unused can feel unfamiliar. But confidence, in this case, is not something you need to bring with you. Leave that to us.

As we did with our Christmas cards, an initiative that brought us many generous words of gratitude, we have created a Valentine’s Day writing drill. It includes a selection of scripts to explore and a handful of thoughtfully chosen phrases to practise, helping you ease back into the pleasure of writing by hand.

It is completely free, with no registration required. When we see an opportunity to support those who feel the pull to write something meaningful by hand, we take it without hesitation.
